A few months ago I made the mistake of buying a used car without first determining which insurance category it fell into. This oversight meant that I was actually paying more for the insurance premium than I had paid for the car itself!

Although factors such as age, driving history, convictions and no claims bonus all go towards determining the cost of your insurance premium, it is often the car’s make, model and modifications that are of most importance.

And it’s also worth knowing that, as of January this year, the old 1-20 groupings were replaced by a more comprehensive groupings system that banded cars from numbers 1-50, one being the lowest and 50 being the highest and most expensive group.

The new groupings are on the recommendation of Thatcham, the motor insurance repair centre, who have claimed that the old banding system was too narrow to reflect cost of repairs to modern vehicles given the number of modified and crossover models available.

The general rule of thumb is that a car’s new banding will be around double what it’s old banding was, so if you have a car that was between groups 4 and 6 under the old model, it will probably now fall somewhere between groups 10 and 16.

If this is the case then there should be little or no change to your insurance premium but if your car’s new grouping is considerably more than twice what it’s old grouping was then there’s a good chance your premium will increase.

Similarly, if it is less than double what it’s old grouping was then you should see a reduction in the cost of your policy.

But, despite the new system, the criteria for these groupings has remained pretty much the same so below is a breakdown of the factors considered when defining a car’s grouping.

Value – the higher the value of the car, the higher it’s grouping will be. This is because the grouping system looks at how much it will cost to replace the vehicle should it be written off.

Parts – insurers also look at the likelihood of damage to parts and the cost of replacing parts. So a more reliable car with cheaper component parts will usually be in a lower group.

Repairs – a longer repair time equates to a higher grouping. So this means that if you have a car with parts that are difficult to come by or take a long time to repair then it’s likely that the car will fall into a higher insurance group.

Performance – high performance vehicles are thought to be more of an insurance risk, as statistics show that those with a greater acceleration or higher top speed are involved in more insurance claims.

Security – many new cars now come with insurance approved security devices but cars that have after market, Thatcham approved, devices such as trackers can generally be placed in a lower group. All of the above affect your premium, but it will also vary when the insurance companies are trying to balance their risks and you will usually find big differences in prices. The blind spot in most cars is sufficiently large for a motorcycle to be completely hidden from view. But other cage drivers simply don't seem to look for us. Unless, of course, they son, daughter, husband or wife happens to ride; unfortunately, we can't tell who those people are and have to be doubly aware of other vehicles than when driving a car.

· Never assume that just because there is no turn signal on that car that it isn't going to turn right in front of you. No matter how many other drivers don't use turn signals, ALWAYS use yours and, if you have a passenger during daylight, hand signals can be an extra preventative measure.

· You know those trucker bumper stickers that say "If you can't see my mirrors, I can't see you"? Well, use this same common sense when riding. If you can't see the driver's face in the rear view mirror of the vehicle in front of you, chances are they can't see you at all. Stay out of blind spots at all times.

· Once you become an experienced rider, when riding on city streets, always allow room for other people's errors. An added safety tip is that you should remain aware of where you would choose to put the scoot down if the need arose. If you get in trouble and have any time at all, select where to lay the motorcycle instead of allowing traffic or the bike to determine that for you. If you can elect to place the bike on the ground, allowing it to move out from between your legs at low speed, you will experience much less road rash than allowing momentum to take you with the motorcycle.

· Novice riders should never carry passengers. That comes later with more road experience. The movements of a rider can cause a situation where you can easily lose control, especially at very low speeds.

Suzuki didn't take the motorcycle world by storm, in stead it was a slow and steady rise to success. There were a variety of motorcycle models that had moderate success. People began to take notice of the Suzuki line of motorcycles after their Diamond Free model won the Mount Fuji Hill Climb in 1953.

In June of 1954, Suzuki implemented their trademark 'S' logo that is still used today. They also put their years of observing the motorcycle industry to good use. 1962 saw them as the winner of the Grand Prix World Championship. Suzuki decided to begin selling its motorcycles in the United States in 1963. They have come a long way since that first introduction. Consumers quickly took to the models, finding them to be valuable and reliable.

Suzuki introduced the X-6 Hustler in 1966, becoming their first street legal performance bike. At the time, it was also the fastest 250CC on the market. They followed the success of it with a 500CC model called The Titan. In 1969 Suzuki took the world by surprise when it introduced the GT750. This was a two stroke motorcycle that could reach a speed of 110 miles per hour. It was able to accelerate from zero to sixty in only five seconds. Since this motorcycle was so well received, Suzuki decided to make a larger bike with the same type of power. The RG500 became the most successful racing bike of that era.

Suzuki continued to dominate the motocross racing circuit in the 1970's, winning the World Motocross Championship in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1976. Due to tighter emission regulations, Suzuki had some stumbling blocks in 1976. However, they were successfully able to redesign their four stroke models to meet these regulations. They models also sold very well.

Suzuki again makes racing history with the introduction of the XN85 in 1982. This was a turbo charged motorcycle that won many high profile races. The first American to win the World Motocross Championship did so in 1982 on this bike. In 1986 they offered the GSX-R, also a turbo charged racer bike. What made it so original was the aluminium frame. This made it the lightest motorcycle in its class.

The second best way to get a good bike fit is to follow these guidelines such as determining the frame height. You should have one to two inches of advance between the top bar of the bike and your crotch. You should also have three to four inches if you are going to be riding on off-road terrain.

If you want to be a little more precise, measure your inseam. Straddle the bike; lift it up until the top bar touches your crotch. Subsequently, you should measure the distance between the bottom of the tires and ground.

Yamaha’s $2000 Electric Bike

This compact electric bike, the EC-02 from Yamaha, costs just under $2000. First introduced in Japan two years ago, the EC-02 is similar to the Enertia motorcycle. But this scooter has more modest specs: a top speed of 18 MPH and a range of 40 miles. So it’s more suitable for commuters and scooting around in your neighborhood. There’s also a special iPod edition of the EC-02, that has a built-in iPod dock.

Interestingly, this scooter also glows in the dark Why? Yamaha says: ‘The technology enables the exterior to give a more vividly stereoscopic impression of the three-dimensional shape of any surface treated with the film.’

This bike is only currently available in Japan.

CRAZY WEDNESDAY: WONDERFUL NEW ELECTRIC BIKE!!!

Look at this absolute beauty. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. Designed by Benjamin Bowden, this bike has a dynamo which stores the energy generated when travelling downhill and releases it to help the cyclist going uphill. I’m buying one!

Amazingly, I’m actually sixty years or so too late. The “Spacelander” bike has come to notice on the blogs recently as it’s a recent new old find from the wonderful site Modern Mechanix, which is so often a brilliant reminder of how old some of our new ideas are. My best source of inspiration for how to “reduce, re-use and recycle” is my grandmother, since her generation did these things all the time out of necessity. In our comparatively wasteful modern society, it’s surprising how often it isn’t a futuristic solution we need, but - to coin a term - a “past-istic” solution.

I was delighted to see this lovely bike surface again, since, as it happens, I have seen it before, albeit only as a postcard - but fell in love with the design there and then. I’m afraid I can’t establish the copyright - the postcard is made by fotofolio.com, and is of an exhibit in the Brooklyn Museum, New York. I just so wanted to show you the beauty in her full-colour glory, that I hope this counts as “fair use”. Interestingly, just about everyone quotes that only 522 were ever made, and apparently this figure comes from the mind-blowingly and awe-inspiringly dedicated research of Leon Dixon. Since the inventor had no idea how many were made, he literally counted them from the manufacturer’s shipping list - which he still has, and includes where they were shipped to and in what colours! His website, The National Bicycle History Archive of America has the most amazing load of information on Benjamin Bowden, and the Spacelander, as well as loads of other wonderful, historic bikes.

Benjamin Bowden himself was born in 1906, in London, and died in Fort Worth, Florida on March 6th, 1998. He designed for the British sports car company, Healey, and later, in Ontario, helped improve the performance of the Ford Thunderbird.

I so want somebody to re-make this lovely machine - perhaps we can start a campaign. I’ve highlighted other bike designs I like before, in particular my main attraction to what I now call the “Plike” - Andrew Maynard’s Plywood Bicycle, was a slight echo of the Spacelander in its design. Phil contributed some very interesting comments on that, and I will be following up on them very soon - thanks.
